Loving Care When You’re Not There
Keep Nancy Barry’s phone number
handy – 727-768-5113; there will come
a time when you’ll need her, everyone
does.
Her business is Leash on Life Pet and
People Services. Loving Care When
You’re Not There is her perfect and
sincere tagline. “It’s a cozy feeling,” she
says, “don’t you think?”
Just like many great business owners, it took a while to decide exactly what she wanted to do
for a living and it took a little shove too, like being laid off, to make it happen, but with her
natural connection with people and pets, Nancy Barry decided that it just made sense to start
a business out of it.
“I wish I found the right answer 10 years ago, 20 years ago. But you know what? The time is
right, and things come to you when they’re supposed to and I can’t picture doing it differently.
I knew it was right because it all just came to me very easily, the name, the ideas, the pictures,
and the way I would promote it, all just came to me.”
Nancy is one of those people you feel an instant comfortable connection with, like you’ve
known her for years. She’ll agree that’s why she’s had a lot of luck in sales, because people
trust her very quickly. “And I think it’s because I don’t push or use that phony savvy, I just talk
to people. And I listen to them.”
Her warm personality and passion for people helped her through 26 successful years in sales.
And all those years in sales, likely helped her to keep a positive attitude through an
unexpected layoff and starting a business during a recession with no real financial backing. “It
won’t work without passion, but this is it for me, this is what I want to do,” she says.
“I knew I could get out there and push it. People tell me I’m really good at making something
from nothing,” as she talks about her humble start with the basic stepping stones of free biz
cards, a very inexpensive website, homemade fliers and sheer determination. Of course now
she’s got a professional website, she’s on Facebook and LinkedIn, she’s posting an entertaining
and educational blog, she’s done seminars in retirement communities on the importance of
pets and your health and she’s in the process of organizing a pet fair for the month of April.
“It’s been fun watching it progress from a semi-professional kind of thing that I tossed
together, to a real bonafide business. So much fun. So much work, but so much fun.”
“I appreciate how concerned people are about finding the right person to care for their pets,”
she says as she discusses the topic of trust. Nancy consults with people and their pets as many
times as they need, until they’re all comfortable with each other. Even the stubborn kids end
up yielding to her, and then loving her. “Animals take to people that they know love them. If
you love them, they will love you back.”
“One of my first clients is a gentleman in my complex who has two champion Irish Setters, 3
and 13; the older one needs a lot of care. He found my card on the bulletin board, emailed me
and wanted to know this and that and everything about me. I answered all of his questions
and told him, ‘this is what I can do for you, give me a chance.’” He ended up feeling very
confident that Nancy was honest and dependable and would take excellent care of his beloved
dogs while he was away. He loved the fact that she wrote detailed notes on how each day
went like caregivers would do at a daycare. She’s kept up that practice for all of her clients and
they really appreciate it.
“I’m not just out there for people with pets,” she says, “it’s called Leash on Life Pet and People
Services.” Nancy also does house sitting, grocery shopping and provisioning for homes, boats
and hotel rooms. She provides a transport service to doctor appointments, airports or other
errands. There’s also cleaning services available and more. “Some people have told me that I
have to cut down on what I do, but I feel I have to build it up.” Her dream is to build the
company to have specialty divisions, but to stay closely involved to be sure it maintains the
personal touch. The combination of services is what sets her business apart.
Nancy brings a comfy, cozy, secure feeling to your home. She knows that trust is the key in this
business, after all this is your pet, or your home, or maybe even your mom that you have
placed in her hands. She’s thrilled to finally be doing what she loves for a living- providing
loving care when you’re not there. Keep her number handy, there will come a time when you
need her, everyone does. 727-768-5113
